In this life skill activity, special education students use photos of real items they would buy at a store (clothing store, flower shop, grocery store, music store, etc.) to calculate the total cost of the item(s) for purchase. See functional level differences for differentiated middle steps. The final step of the activity is the functional life skill of "dollar up". "Dollar up" is when you look at the total cost, disregard the amount in the cent area, and count one more dollar.

The funcitonal academic activity should be used in the classroom as a hands-on practical lesson prior to going into the communicty where money is used during Communicty Based Instruction (CBI).

Functional Level Differences

• Low - 1 items, dollar up
• Moderate - sum of 2 items, dollar up, tell coins for change
• High - sum of 2 itmes, determine tax, dollar up, tell coins for change
