In this life skill activity, special educaiton students use fictitious receipts form restaurants to determine the appropriate amount of tip to leave for the server. Students use a tip guide and calculator or the tip table to determine the dollar amount to be left. Both 15% and 20% gratuity are taught.

This functional academic activity should be used in the classroom as a hands-on practical lesson prior to going into the community where money is used during Community Based Instruction (CBI).

Life skill teacher extension: Discussion of why you leave a tip at certain restaurants and not others. Discussion of why you would leave 15% and why 20%. Use as a training on how to use the calculator on student's cell phone.

Functional Level Differences

• Low - use 15% tip guide & calculator
• Moderate & High - let students choose 15% or 20% tip guide & students may use calculator (practice using cell phone calculator)
